MMML: This time around, you won our April 2015, Best Song showcase with your track “Come so far” Tell our readers about this song.
J Nic: I wrote this song in a day, I came across a page on Facebook called Pray For Nelly. It was about a local teen girl who was from Fall River MA. fighting against cancer. It immediately stood out to me because my father and grandmother died from cancer. I decided to click on the page and after reading a few of the status updates it hit home. I remember reading about how she wanted to quit and give up. That made me sad; she’s so young you know. I decided to write this song for her even though I did not know her personally. I used the song to raise over $1100 dollars for her and her family.
MMML: That is AWESOME. It’s really great to see Hip Hop artist using their voice to shed light on community and social issues. Thank you for doing that for Nelly and shedding light on people that had to deal with Cancer. What single or project are you currently pushing?
J Nic: I’m working on this collab tape with a talented emcee from the UK named Cezar our album is called UNDERNEATH. This is going to be insane keep your eyes peeled.
MMML: How would you describe your sound and style?
J Nic: At the end of the day, I’m me. You will hear bits of EM or Banks in my songs. Any emcee I had hanging on my walls.
MMML: It’s difficult to come up as an artist these days, what is your formula for success?
J Nic: Stay away from the local scene and push promo. It’s all about promoting yourself and the look you portray. It’s hard now a days to even get a hit record because you have to make music for other people not yourself. You end up making music for the club or radio. It’s a sad time for real hip hop.
MMML: What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment so far?
J Nic: This song and donating the money I raised from it. I can’t describe the feeling.
MMML: Who does your production?
J Nic: Mark Cornell my Dr. Dre. An incredibly gifted man behind the scenes and owner of Hardwired Studios. Check that out on Facebook as well.
MMML: What is your opinion about the music industry? What would you change if you could?
J Nic: I think the industry is horrible and real rap or hip hop is not on the radio. It’s better to be an indie artist now a days. I would change everything if I could!
MMML: Any final words for the people?
J Nic: Yes, as I promised if I won, I would let the mother and daughter say a few words because this song is for them not me…..
Jenelle “NELLY” Camara: No one has ever done anything like you did!! I appreciate having someone like you In my corner who is willing to kick cancers butt with me.
Laura Joshua Eaton: The songs message was very touching. The way you collaborated the words to her journey was beyond breathtaking!! You brought many tears to friends, family, and even strangers eyes..
