All Eyez On Assata Shakur: Trump wants Assata Exiled From Cuba and brought to U.S.
Deputy director of American affairs at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gustavo Machin, told Yahoo News that he has no intention of returning the woman born Joanne Chesimard to the United States. “I can say it is off the table.”
While in Miami, President Trump demanded that Cuba returns Assata Shakur while referring to her as “a cop killer.” This is in reference to her conviction of killing a New Jersey state trooper and escaping from a U.S prison in the 70’s. New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie, Senator Bob Mendez and other officials, have called for Shakur’s return before the country moves forward with Cuba. In a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, Mendez wrote that Cuba’s decision to provide sanctuary to Shakur “is an intolerable insult to all those who long to see justice served.”
Gustavo Machin said that Cuba granted Shakur asylum. Therefore, she would not be subject to extradition to the United States. Machin also voiced his skepticism about the case being that it involves a black activist.
“There are very serious doubts about that case. We consider that a politically motivated case against that lady.” – Machin
