Music Biz: DJ Khaled looking to replace L.A. Reid as head of Epic Records

According to a Page Six report, hip-hop may see a familiar face assume the vacancy that has been left at the head of Epic Records since L.A. Reid’s departure earlier this month. The publication has cited an “industry insider” as having informed them that music business wiz DJ Khaled has stated an interest in pursuing the position.

“He was petitioning to get that job. He’s like, ‘I make more happen than anyone in the game, why would I not be considered to run the label?’,” the source is quoted as saying. News of a potential Khaled takeover comes only two days after the We The Best DJ shared praise for the beleaguered executive while in attendance at the Billboard Music Awards, in Las Vegas. “He’s amazing. He’s the Berry Gordy of our time. L.A. Reid is amazing. That’s my thoughts. He’s an amazing person and he’s a great executive, a great music mogul and he’s a great friend,” Khaled reportedly told the press.

While much speculation has circulated since Reid’s exit, several factors will inevitably play into what direction Sony will go in from this point forward. Word has been going around that either Sony Music UK CEO Jason IIey or RCA president Tom Corson may be brought over to oversee Epic’s operations. The possibility that Sony CEO Rob Stringer may fold Epic into RCA has also been floating around.
