Music Biz- Bruno Mars Sued for Stealing Uptown Funk from 1979 Hip Hop Record

Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson created the Grammy-winning single, “Uptown Funk” that was released in 2014. Beyond the single’s success, the music video drew in even more fans with its throwback, dance feels that sits at millions of views on YouTube.

New reports via TMZ reveal that the popular song is under fire by a rap group that claims it’s just too similar to their 70s hit. The female singing trio, The Sequence, released “Funk You Up” in 1979 that became the first rap song to reach Billboard’s Top 50 Singles. Documents obtained by the publication says Bruno’s track has “significant and substantially similar compositional elements.”

The trio is asking for an unspecified sum of money and trial to go after Bruno and Mark. This isn’t the first time “Uptown Funk” has fought copyright issues. Back in Septemeber, Roger Troutman and Zapp came after Mark for allegedly stealing pieces of their 1980 track “More Bounce to the Ounce.” The duo claimed the first 48-seconds of the song has the same sounds of their classic track.

Mark and Bruno’s team have yet to respond to the latest allegations. Listen to both tracks below, what do you guys think?
