Music Biz: Cardi B Breaks Apple Music Streaming Record

100 Million Streams Worldwide for Cardi B!

On Friday (April 13), Apple announced that Cardi B’s debut album, Invasion of Privacybroke the Apple Music record for the most streamed album by a female artist in one week. According to Apple’s numbers, the project earned more than 100 million streams worldwide, shattering the previous record that was held by Taylor Swift’s Reputation, Billboard reports.

Not only did Cardi shatter the record, she broke it by mid-week when Invasion of Privacy had already received more than double the streams of Swift’s album. The “Be Careful” rapper’s project currently sits in the No. 5 spot on Apple Music’s worldwide chart of most streamed albums. Looks like Cardi B is making some real “Money Moves”

The numbers overall for Cardi are off the charts, with Privacy racking up more than 2.6 million tweets since its release and the rapper amassing more than 3 million followers, 85% of which she’s picked up in the past year. As if all that wasn’t enough, the mom-to-be is gearing up for her first visit to the Coachella festival after revealing that she’ll be banking $70,000 for her performance at the Indio, California, festival, which sounds like a lot, but isn’t really, since she also noted that her stage production will set her back nearly $300,000.

Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow,” the most chantable song of 2017, introduced the Bronx MC’s lively around-the-way-girl persona to the world. Her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, reveals more of Cardi’s layers, the MC leaning forcefully into her many influences. “I Like It,” featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, is a nod to her Afro-Caribbean roots, while “Bickenhead” reimagines Project Pat’s battle-of-the-sexes classic “Chickenhead” as a hustler’s anthem. There are lyrical winks at NYC culture (“Flexing on b*tches as hard as I can/Eating halal, driving a Lam”), but Cardi also hits on universal moments, like going back and forth with a lover (“Ring”) and reckoning with infidelity (“Thru Your Phone”).
