DeSean P

DeSean P is a Hip-Hop artist born in North Minneapolis and now living in Miami. Born into a musical family, DeSean’s father was a nationally touring musician and this earlier exposure to music fueled his passion for the art. With the intellect of a college grad and the street sensibility of his native Minneapolis, DeSean’s new music invokes the feel of artists such as Lupe Fiasco. His flow is commercially viable with a message and a meaning. Songs that you could bump at the club but would still give you pause to think.

Please introduce yourself to the readers.

I am DeSean P, an underground Hip-Hop icon from Minneapolis, Minnesota, living the dream in Miami.

What does the artist DeSean P bring to the table that hasn’t been seen before?

I’m a college educated, street raised, and poetic rebel with a pour heart. I wake up everyday with a plan for the Universe. I don’t think other rappers think like me. My mind is what makes me different.

Why do you think you will succeed in this oversaturated urban music game?

I know I will survive in the music game because I am a survivor. This is who I am. It’s my calling to paint pictures of hope and reality for my people. That is by any means necessary.

All in one, what is your formula for success?

It’s all about perseverance and strategic thinking. Nothing happens over night. Things take time and no matter how hard you work, if you are not working smart it won’t last.

In your opinion what are the characteristics of a successful artist?

An old football coach of mine installed in me early these characteristics: Number 1: Hard Work. Number 2: Attitude. Number 3: Respect. Number 4: Encouragement. Equals Success, Equals Success, Equals Success… it kind of just stuck with me.

What artists are you inspired by artists and why?

Lupe Fiasco has had the most influence on my rap career. One day I was discouraged with the Hip-Hop industry, and I didn’t believe anyone would listen to my music if it had a positive message. And than I went to a concert at The University of Miami thinking I was the only Lupe fan that would know all the words… huge mistake. Girls, guys, and people of all shades recited his lyrics. At that moment, I knew that I would too be great.

What did you learn from your upbringing that has helped you navigate the music business?

I learned people. This is a who you know, and what you do with who you know industry. I grew up in the city where who you know might just be the reason you are alive.

What has/have been your biggest accomplishment(s) so far in your career?

I have many accomplishments that I am proud of, but the blessing that sticks out the most is the education I made available for young students in my city. High Schools and Middle Schools in Minneapolis use some of my poetry performances as a tool to teach. I just felt honoured knowing that I am helping someone.

What can we expect to hear and see from you in the near future?

The official video to “Touch Your Soul” is set to release September 2013. The official video to “Minnesota” will also release in September 2013. I have a project I did called “FearLess” for people living with Parkinson’s Disease set to release soon. And my record label will be in full effect before the end of 2013.

If you had the opportunity to work with any other artist who would it be and why?

Before it’s all said and done, I am going to have a dope track with Lupe. I believe in the law of attraction so it’s going to happen. He just hasn’t heard my craft yet. But I want to do a track with him because he inspired me, so I want to make a song that would inspire others. I aspire to inspire.

What other areas of the entertainment business are you interested in? Why?

I have been forced to learn how to direct and edit music videos. I am self-taught, but I have a genuine interest for the work. I think any art that can bring emotions and word to life is beautiful. I will always be in the creative field.

Tell us how to follow your progress, where can we find you?
