Music Biz: Mr. Cheeks & The Lost Boyz Gets Profiled on TV One’s ‘Unsung’ Tonight

TV One’s Unsung is on a roll with their biographical look at some of the most revered rap collectives of the 1990s. Recently, they profiled the influential group Brand Nubian and next up are the legendary Jamaica, Queens (N.Y.) foursome Lost Boyz.

The rap group consisted of lead MC Mr. Cheeks, the gruff-voiced adlibber the late Freaky Tah, partner-in-rhyme Pretty Lou and DJ Spigg Nice. Together, they crafted infectious party songs and ‘hood anthems that rocked from the East to the West Coast.

In 1996, Lost Boyz released their debut album Legal Drug Money, which boasted the anthems “Music Makes Me High,” “Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless,” “Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimas and Benz” and the beloved rap ballad “Renee.” The album quickly went gold in two months after its release. The group’s 1997 follow-up, Love, Peace & Nappiness, also went gold and featured the hit singles, “Me & My Crazy World” and the title track.

Two years after the album’s release, things took a turn for the worst when Freaky Tah, whose real name is Tahleek Rogers, was fatally shot in the back of the head while leaving a party in a case of mistaken identity. Freaky Tah was the heart of the group and his death left a major void in their music.

Pretty Lou is thrilled that the LB Fam’s life story is finally being told.

“I think people are going to see us in a different life. Back then we were young loud,” Pretty Lou tells Black America Web. “You’re going to see us more like the people we are now. Just breaking it down and people seeing us for who we are.”

Unsung: Lost Boyz, which will be the show’s season finale, will premiere on April 22 at 9PM ET on TV One.
