Music Biz: John Legend & Netflix Developing Hip Hop Competition Show, “Rhythm & Flow”
Variety reports that the 38-year-old R&B superstar is collaborating with Netflix and former NBC executive Jeff Gaspin to develop Rhythm & Flow, an unscripted talent competition series that pits rappers against one another while also focusing on soul and R&B.
The show is produced by both Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co. and Gaspin’s Primary Wave Entertainment, where he serves as president. Netflix is said to be approaching a finished deal for the show in the wake of Legend and Get Lifted’s new first-look deal at Sony Pictures Television. Both companies previously worked alongside one another on WGN America’s recently canceled slave drama series, Underground.
While it’s unclear whether Legend will actually be on camera, what talent will be on deck and how many episodes they have planned, the show’s premise is interesting in the sense that it is keeping the apparent familial relationship of Hip Hop and R&B so strong.
