Remembering Sandra Bland- Janelle Monae, Zendaya, Chris Rock & More Honor Sandra Bland On 30th Birthday
The memory of Sandra Bland lives on. Chris Rock, Janelle Monae, Zendaya, Sanaa Lathan, and more paid tribute to Bland in honor of what would’ve been her 30th birthday on Tuesday (Feb. 7).
In 2015, Bland became part of a growing list of black women to die in police custody. The then-28-year-old was found dead in a Waller County jail cell, two days after being pulled over by Texas State Trooper Brian T. Encinia for reportedly failing to use her turn signal upon changing lanes.
Her death was ruled a suicide.
Last March, the Texas Department of Public Safety announced that Encinia had been fired for his treatment of Bland during the traffic stop.
Six months after Encinia was fired, Bland’s family reached a $1.9 million wrongful death settlement with the Waller County Jail and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
