The incident occurred Feb. 16 when former Officer Bruce Johnson was alerted that his house was being burglarized. “He gets this call, he looks at his video, he sees this man in his house going through his children’s room rummaging through everything,” Johnson’s attorney Mark Thering said in a statement.
Authorities say the suspect, Derek Carr, was confronted by Johnson and after a brief struggle, Johnson shot Carr in the back and arm. In the video, caught by an onlooker, Johnson is seen cursing and kicking the incapacitated suspect multiple times.
