(Video) Jennifer Lopez to Donate $1 Million for Hurricane Relief Efforts in Puerto Rico
At a press conference on Sunday (Sept. 24), Lopez said that her donation will come from proceeds of her Las Vegas revue, All I Have. She also added that she is working with Mark Cuban and other celebrities who have coordinated two airplanes full of supplies, including generators, that are ready to fly to the island.
“Alex Roriguez and I, who are both New Yorkers, are using all our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports and business to garner support for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean,” said Lopez.
The entertainer also urged her fans to donate to the relief efforts as well. “Today, Puerto Rico needs our help,” she said (via E! News). “I urge you to support and donate to the efforts (UnitedforPuertoRico.com) of the first lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosselló. Together we can help rebuild our island and the Caribbean.”
Governor Cuomo also made a reference to Republican President Donald Trump’s comments criticizing athletes who protest during the national anthem, saying “instead of arguing with football players … why don’t we put the politics aside and focus on helping Americans in desperate need.”
Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico on Wednesday with heavy winds and rain, knocking out all power to the island. During his visit, Cuomo said he witnessed “breathtaking” devastation. The week before, Cuomo traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands following Hurricane Irma.
