Bruce Springsteen fans were in for a homegrown surprise when the Boss’ River Tour rolled into Dublin on the weekend.
Springsteen was joined onstage with U2’s frontman Bono for a cover of Patti Smith’s “Because the Night.” The superstar collab took place at Croke Park for the second of Springsteen’s two shows in the Irish capital.
Bono, who was born in Dublin, was returning a favor. When U2 concluded an eight-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden last July, it was Springsteen who make the guest appearance. On that occasion, U2 and Springsteen teamed up for “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and a cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” — a song the Boss first performed with the Irish rockers onstage on Sept. 25, 1987 at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.
U2 and Springsteen have tackled Smith’s classic on more than one occasion, including a rendition at MSG back in 2009 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
