Music Biz – Spotify Unveils Its Most-Streamed Songs of Summer 2017

With only a few more weeks left in the season, the crew at Spotify has unveiled their list of the most-streamed songs of summer 2017. And the winning track should surprise absolutely no one.
Though the wildly popular “Despacito (Remix)” didn’t win Song of the Summer at this year’s VMAs, it did top Spotify’s U.S. and global summer lists with more than 786 million streams. The Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber smash hit has broken a number of records, including the most-watched YouTube video in history as well as the most-streamed song of all time. It’s also spent 16 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, tying Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” for a single with the most weeks at No. 1.
It’s also not surprising that hip-hop dominated the top 10 on each Spotify summer list. In the U.S., Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3” came in at No. 2, followed by DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts” featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. French Montana’s “Unforgettable” with Swae Lee took the No. 4 slot, while Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” rounded out the top five.
On the global list, DJ Khaled took second place with “Wild Thoughts,” followed by French Montana’s “Unforgettable” and DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One” at No. 3 and 4, respectively. This is where the lists began to really differ.
The second half of the U.S.’s top 10 was made up entirely of hip-hop and r&b tracks, including 21 Savage’s “Bank Account,” Khalid’s “Location,” and Childish Gambino’s “Redbone”; however, the second half of the global top 10 list included pop hits like Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” Charlie Puth’s “Attention,” and Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder.”
You can stream the U.S. and global top 30 songs of the summer below. The tracks were ranked by analyzing Spotify’s most listened to tracks between the first day of summer (June 21) and Aug. 27.
